Choose PEK for Chaoyang and eastern Dongcheng; consider PKX for Line 19 and southern Beijing

Compare PEK and PKX airport trains, transfers and late-night options for Dongcheng, Xicheng and Chaoyang.

The short answer: Beijing Capital (PEK) is normally easier for Chaoyang and eastern Dongcheng. Beijing Daxing (PKX) is competitive for southern Beijing and places near Line 19, including parts of western central Beijing. For Wangfujing, Tiananmen or Qianmen, neither airport train reaches the hotel districts directly, so flight time and the final transfer matter more than the airport code.

Destination Usually the simpler airport Why
Sanlitun, Liangmaqiao, Guomao, northeast Chaoyang PEK The airport line reaches Sanyuanqiao and Dongzhimen on Beijing’s east side
Dongzhimen, Beixinqiao, Lama Temple area PEK Direct airport-line stops at Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao
Wangfujing, Tiananmen, Qianmen Compare flights and exact hotel location Both routes require an onward metro ride or taxi
Southern Beijing or an address near Line 19 PKX The Daxing Airport Express terminates at Caoqiao, with transfers to Lines 10 and 19
Western central Beijing near Ping’anli or Taipingqiao PKX can be competitive Line 19 runs north from Caoqiao through these stations
Beijing West railway station PKX if the intercity timetable works A separate railway connects PKX with Beijing West

From Capital Airport (PEK)

The Capital Airport Express links Terminals 2 and 3 with Sanyuanqiao, Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao. Current Beijing ticket rules identify all three city stations as interchange points between the airport line and the main metro network: Sanyuanqiao, Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao.

Choose the city stop for the destination rather than automatically riding to the end:

  • Sanyuanqiao is a useful handoff for northeast and eastern Chaoyang, including trips toward Liangmaqiao and Guomao.
  • Dongzhimen serves the Dongzhimen transport hub and the eastern side of central Beijing.
  • Beixinqiao connects with Line 5, useful for the Lama Temple area and onward travel south through Dongcheng.

That geography is why PEK generally wins for Sanlitun, the embassy area, Liangmaqiao and eastern Dongcheng: its train puts you on the same side of Beijing as the accommodation. With large bags, a taxi from one of the city stops may be easier than another metro transfer.

There is no airport-line station at Terminal 1. Follow the airport’s signs to the connection with Terminal 2 before joining the train.

From Daxing Airport (PKX)

The Daxing Airport Express runs from the terminal to Caoqiao, where passengers can transfer to Lines 10 and 19. The airport station is on B1. The airport currently lists PKX-to-Caoqiao service from 06:00 to 23:00 Monday–Saturday and to 23:30 on Sunday. Ticket checks close five minutes before the last train, and the airport recommends arriving at the platform area at least ten minutes before it. Caoqiao-to-airport trains start at 05:30. Check the airport’s current operating information again for an early or late flight.

The scheduled express journey between Caoqiao and the airport is 19 minutes. Beijing’s municipal government also gives an approximate 20-minute journey for the separate intercity railway between Daxing Airport and Beijing West under normal scheduled running. Neither figure includes walking, waiting or the onward city journey.

A standard-class Daxing Airport Express trip from PKX to Caoqiao costs ¥35. The operator’s August 2026 rules set ordinary fares at ¥10, ¥25 or ¥35 by distance; business class is ¥50 under the current fare rules. The regular metro journey after Caoqiao costs extra.

PKX is therefore not automatically awkward simply because it lies south of central Beijing. For a hotel near Line 19, the fast airport train and one transfer at Caoqiao can make a tidy route. For Sanlitun or northeast Chaoyang, however, Caoqiao leaves a substantial cross-city journey.

The Beijing West intercity train is useful only when its timetable fits and Beijing West is convenient for the destination. It is a scheduled railway service, not a turn-up-and-go replacement for the airport express.

For Wangfujing, Tiananmen and Qianmen, compare the whole trip

“City centre” is too broad to determine the better airport. Wangfujing, Qianmen and the Tiananmen area sit between the two airport approaches.

From PEK, the usual pattern is the airport line to Beixinqiao or Dongzhimen, followed by the metro or a taxi. From PKX, it is the airport express to Caoqiao, followed by Line 19, Line 10 or a taxi. Either route normally requires at least one handoff, and long station walks can change the calculation when carrying luggage.

For a central hotel, use this order of priorities:

  1. Prefer a clearly better nonstop flight or arrival time.
  2. Avoid a scheduled arrival after the airport railway closes.
  3. If flights are comparable, lean toward PEK for eastern Dongcheng and consider PKX for an address convenient to Line 19.
  4. Check the hotel’s nearest metro station—not just its district—before deciding.

Late arrivals: bus or taxi

Neither airport railway runs 24 hours. Daxing has scheduled night buses after rail hours. Under the routes announced in June 2025, one service runs via Beijing South and West stations, Fuxingmen and Xizhimen; another serves places near the Temple of Heaven, Chongwenmen, Beijing Railway Station, Guomao and the National Agricultural Exhibition Center. The municipal night-bus notice lists stops and departure windows. Recheck the route and boarding point at the airport because night services can change.

At either airport, a taxi is the simplest door-to-door option after the train stops, when several people can share the fare, or when luggage makes transfers impractical. Use the signed taxi rank and keep the hotel’s full name and address in Chinese ready.

Beijing taxis are metered. The published tariff starts at ¥13 for the first 3 kilometres, adds distance and low-speed or waiting charges, uses a higher per-kilometre rate from 23:00 to 05:00, and charges road tolls to the passenger under the municipal fare table. A fixed airport-to-hotel estimate is therefore unreliable. For an eastern central address, PKX will generally involve the longer road journey; congestion can raise the fare from either airport.

Paying for the airport train and metro

Beijing introduced direct subway-gate payment with overseas Mastercard and Visa cards in 2024 according to the municipal government. Current Daxing Airport Express rules also accept foreign cards, alongside physical tickets, BEIJING PASS and other payment methods.

Use one payment device throughout a journey: the same physical card at entry and exit, or the same card in the same phone wallet. Current rules specify one card per passenger and do not allow a physical card and its phone-wallet version to be mixed within one trip. If contactless payment fails, buy a ticket at a machine or staffed counter.

The decision

Choose PEK for Chaoyang, Sanlitun, Liangmaqiao, Guomao, Dongzhimen and eastern Dongcheng. Consider PKX for southern Beijing, a convenient Line 19 address or a well-timed railway connection to Beijing West. For Wangfujing, Qianmen and Tiananmen, start with flight quality and arrival time, then inspect the final metro or taxi leg.
